Fireplace Screens

Are you in the market to replace your old fireplace screen or perhaps buy a new one? The choices are many these days and a bit confusing, but if you shop wisely you should be able to get a fireplace screen that matches your home decor and looks great. Antique fireplace screens are still very popular, especially when placed in a more formal dining room (versus a family room). Antique screens are often finished with gold or brass colors and have detailed designs with scrolls or swirls. Try to find something that fits with your firewood/log holder and tool set. Traditional fireplace screens go with just about any rooms interior and those constructed with wrought iron or copper are top sellers. If you are doing an update to your family room or living room consider putting in a new contemporary fireplace screen. The newer styles of screens are simple and functional yet still very attractive to the eye.

Buying Guide - When looking for a new fireplace screen one of the hardest things to do is 'fit' it properly. Screens do come in a big selection of sizes and shapes. The easiest ones to fit are the single-panel screens simply because they are made in a straight line so there is no guess work like you would have with the 5-panel style which fold to get bigger or smaller. Experts recommend that you buy a fireplace screen that is 3 to 5 inches larger than the measured height of your fireplace and 10 to 12 inches wider than the actual width of the fireplace opening. You definitely want the screen to cover the entire opening just for safety sake. Keep in mind that you can get built in fireplace doors which eliminate the need for a fireplace screen. We have heard conflicting opinions on fireplace doors - some say they trap in heat and don't allow your home to get the benefits of the fire while others say using a screen and having no doors on the opening of the fireplace allows all the heat to escape through your chimney. I'm of the opinion that when I have a fire in my fireplace I want it for ambiance and a little heat, so I'm not concerned if some heat escapes through my fireplace and out the chimney.
